The Heinz 57 Year

When I turned 50, I just referred to myself as a “half century.”

  • 51 I was one card short of a full deck.
  • 52 is the number of playing cards in a deck, so I could no longer be accused of “playing with less than full deck.”
  • 53 gave me one joker. ?54 the second one.
  • 55 was the double nickel birthday.

I couldn’t come up with anything for 56. ?Basically I was just passing time until 57. ?Which I hit on Friday.

I told a friend who wished me a happy 57th that I was now in my Heinz 57* year. ?”Oh,” she said, “So you’re tangy and zesty, huh?”

I replied, “Better than brown and runny.”

I did no biking this weekend as I was getting the house ready to have a couple of friends stop by.

Anytime we hang out, there’s tons of food:

And dogs just waiting for some of it to hit the floor.

Hell, we eat so much we have to invade nearby restaurants.

Always lots of hugging going on.

I’ve got quite the self-reliant bunch of friends. ?They generally just come in and take over:

Although they leave the technology to me:

Sitting around and talking is what we do best. ?Actually, it’s just sitting around and talking until the next batch of food shows up.

Lots of games and laughs:

Even time for reflection.

“Any of the chocolate raspberry ice cream left, you think?”

And cool presents:

It was a nice time with a lot of very strange, but damned cool people.

*?I sent an email to Heinz asking if they’d like to sponsor The Ride. ?I’m betting that “brown and runny” thing ain’t gonna go over with The Powers That Be.

Update: ?Heard back from Heinz:

Thanks for visiting our website.

We’re flattered that you’ve selected our Company as potenital sponsor for your bike ride.

While we wish we could be of assistance, we hope you will understand that we receive numerous requests from many very worthy causes. Since our resources are limited, we have, as a general rule, restricted our contributions to tax-exempt organizations, rather than individuals or sponsorships. Therefore, we must decline your offer.

We extend our very best wishes for your success.

I’m betting if I looked like this . . .

I could have used one of these as a birthday present, y’know.

. . . they’d have found a couple of bucks to help me on my way. ?Hell, I’m betting they would have sent an entire Heinz 57?crew?to help out.
